How do I transfer files to my ClassMate?
There are two ways of transferring files either using Windows Explorer or the ClassMate companion. Both ways are described in details in the User Guide found on the ClassMate.
What type of SD cards should I use in ClassMate?
The ClassMate is compatible with SD (Secure Digital) cards up to 2gb and SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards of 4gb or higher. If you purchase an 4gb or higher SD card be sure the card bears the SDHC designation.
Why does ClassMate not recognize my SD card?
If you have an SD card which is not recognized or which results in many media errors you should format it. Although most commercial cards come pre-formatted it may be possible the formatting was not done correctly. To format, insert the SD card into your PC card reader. Open the ‘My Computer’ program from your desktop and right-click (or press the Applications key on your keyboard) to bring up the context menu for the SD card. Select ‘Format’ from this menu. Also, HumanWare recommends SanDisk SD cards for best results.
Why am I not able to read all the files on my SD card?
After you copy files to the SD card, it is important to use the Safely Remove Hardware option from the Windows System Tray before disconnecting the Stream or removing the SD card from your computer. If you do not do this the File Allocation Table (FAT) of your SD card may be corrupt and then the files may not be readable. If this happens you will need to format the card and recopy all the files to it.
Must I always connect the ClassMate to my computer to copy files to its SD card?
No. Newer computers come with built-in SD card slots. If your computer has an SD slot, then the fastest way to copy is to place your SD card in that slot and copy the files to it directly. If you don’t have an SD slot in your computer then you can connect the ClassMate to a USB connector of your PC using the long USB cable provided with the ClassMate. You may also purchase a USB card reader and connect it to the USB connector of your PC. These USB card readers will have several slots for various types of memory cards including SD. Copying to a USB card reader is usually faster than copying to the ClassMate through its USB cable.
Why does ClassMate become silent for a minute or so after inserting my SD card?
The more files you have on an SD card the longer it takes for ClassMate to scan the card especially if there are many files in a folder. When you have many files, try to organize them in multiple subfolders.
The more files I have on my SD card the longer it takes to add more files. Is there anything I can do to speed up the transfer?
The SD card’s file allocation table becomes more complex the more files you have in a single folder. When transferring the files, Windows must both copy the files and update the file allocation table. To make the table update as efficient as possible you should copy the documents to a single folder for each of them. Similarly, if you have many files in your and folders, then try to organize them in subfolders.
Why isn't my Co:Writer application appearing in the Neo after I complete the installation? It said it was successful.
Make sure you are using the version of AlphaSmart Manager software that ships with your Co:Writer bundle. The current version that has been tested successfully with the installation is Alphasmart Manager 2.3. Also, before you send the applet to install make sure you uncheck the box to "delete smartapplets not found in the send list".
Why am I getting the window with the message "Co:Writer is not properly installed" whenever I try to use Co:Writer SOLO Edition?
This is an error that can occur on Windows machines in which a certain DLL file is not registered with the system during the installation. To fix this follow the instructions below:
- Click the Start Button
- Click "Run..."
- Type: regsvr32 C:\DonJohnston\CoWriter\CoWriterXMLParser.dll
- Hit "Enter" or click "OK". You should now get a message that says "DLLRegisterServer in C:\DonJohnston\CoWriter\CoWriterXMLParser.dll succeeded". Co:Writer should now work properly.
Why is my Co:Writer SE crashing when I try to launch it while working in SOLO?
This is a common issue with Tablet PCs or PCs running Windows XP Tablet Edition. The current version of Co:Writer SE will crash when launched AFTER SOLO is already open. We are looking into a fix for this in future versions.
Where did my "Settings" palette button go? Why can't my student change their settings?
When creating a new student in Co:Writer SE you will be guided through a wizard to create a "writer file" for that student. This file contains all the custom preferences for him/her which includes which palette buttons they have available to them. If you select the "Beginning" Writer Level option during the creation process it will not give the student the "Settings" button in their palette. You will need to log in to Co:Writer as a Teacher, select your student from the drop down list, then click on the "Palette" button to manually assign the settings button. From here you can assign any number of buttons the student has available.
What are the default Administrator and Teacher passwords?
Administrator: admin1
Teacher: school
Why is the word window just staying in one place on my screen and not tracking with the cursor?
This functionality is only guaranteed within the SOLO program. Some word processors will not allow for the word window to track depending on how the word processor handles text. A notable application to not have tracking enabled is Microsoft Office XP (2002). Office 2003 is fully supported however. We recommend always keeping your Microsoft software updated to the latest versions through Microsoft update.
Where are the pronunciations for Co:Writer? Why is the button grayed out?
Co:Writer SOLO Edition does not currently have that feature implemented. It will be available in a future release of Co:Writer.
Why is Co:Writer is only sending the first few letters/words of my sentence to my word processor?
On some Windows systems the "Auto-Hide" option needs to be enabled for the proper transfer of the sentence window.
- Click the "Settings" button on the floating palette.
- Click the tab labeled "Prediction"
- Check the box labeled "Auto-Hide". Click "OK".
If the Settings button is not available under "More Commands" then you will need to login to Co:Writer as a teacher. In the Teacher Options you can then select your student from the writer drop down menu (It will say "Teacher" by default till you select the students name). You can then click the Settings button in the Teacher Options palette to access that students settings.
When I turn on my Alphasmart 3000 I get a message reading "Bus Error Accessing: 0x00405555". How can I fix this?
Will Co:Writer SmartApplet work with the AlphaSmart 3000 IR (Infrared)?
All the normal IR functions (keyboard emulation, sending a file to the host, the Get Utility) should work as usual. What will not work is trying to download the Applet or Topic Dictionaries through the IR mode. This needs to be done with a standard cable connection (USB or serial cable).
What dictionary comes with Co:Writer SmartApplet?
There is a 6K main dictionary for Co:Writer SmartApplet. In addition, Co:Writer SmartApplet comes with approximately 20 topic dictionaries. Use these topic dictionaries along with the 6K main dictionary so that the predicted word lists match the subject your students are writing about.
How many topic dictionaries can I use with the SmartApplet?
Only 5 topic dictionaries can be downloaded to the SmartApplet at any one time (because of memory constraints with the AlphaSmart keyboard). When using the 10K Topic Dictionary, you will be unable to use another Topic Dictionary simultaneously (due to memory constraints with the AlphaSmart 3000).
Do you need a computer for the Co:Writer SmartApplet?
Yes, you need a desktop machine for loading the SmartApplet onto the AlphaSmart 3000 and selecting topic dictionaries. You also need a desktop machine and the full Co:Writer 4000/SOLO Edition program for creating and editing topic dictionaries. The Co:Writer SmartApplet Installer was designed for a Windows 98/ME operating system on the PC and OS 9 ONLY for the Mac.
How do I get the topic dictionaries I want to use with Co:Writer SmartApplet?
You can choose the Co:Writer Topic Dictionaries that are included on the Co:Writer SmartApplet CD, Topic Dictionaries you make with Co:Writer 4000 or Topic Dictionaries you get from our web site.
The flexible spelling feature of Co:Writer 4000 really helps my poor spellers. Is this feature available with Co:Writer SmartApplet?
Co:Writer SmartApplet does not include FlexSpell™. This flexible spelling feature, a unique and important component of Co:Writer 4000, relies on Text to Speech technology (TTS) to reinforce correct spelling. Due to limited memory, the AlphaSmart 3000 cannot support (TTS), therefore we decided not to include FlexSpell in Co:Writer SmartApplet.
Why is Draft:Builder crashing whenever I try to save?
Make sure you are not using any special characters in the file name. Currently, Draft:Builder also does not support periods in the file name. As an alternative to periods it is recommended to use the underscore ( ex. "Jesse_GreekHistory_Grade9")
