Traveling Off the Map with Lewis and Clark, INCITE! Films, Start-to-Finish and SOLO
Everyday Tier 1 UDL Instruction and Intervention—
Support struggling learners—identify problems EARLY!
Step 1: Anchor Instruction
»Use the Lewis and Clark INCITE! film set and supplemental instruction to:
- Build background knowledge
- Facilitate visualization
- Help learners make personal connections between themselves and Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the American Northwest
Step 2: Provide Multiple Means of Representation, Expression and Engagement
»Start-to-Finish Use Core Content and Library books (print, audio, and computer formats) to proactively eliminate barriers.
- Standards-correlated, engaging content
- Two readability levels (2/3 and 4/5) and multiple supports for decoding, fluency, building background knowledge, vocabulary and comprehension
- Guided reading and writing in response to reading templates
- Build content-related vocabulary. (Use with vocabulary-building strategies like Content Connect’s Term-inator graphic organizer.)
- Data collection with online quizzing (electronic or print formats) for vocabulary and comprehension
Traveling Off the Map: The Lewis and Clark (Get Chapter 1 PDF) (grade 4/5 readability)
Native Americans in the Time of Lewis and Clark (Get Article 1 PDF) (grade 2/3 readability)
Sacagawea: The Trip to the West (Get Chapter 1 PDF) (grade 2/3 readability)
»Flexible reading and writing supports in the SOLO Literacy Suite differentiates instruction allowing struggling learners to accelerate their reading and writing progress.
- Provide text-to-speech support and individualized reading, learning and writing templates.
- Import electronic text—documents and web content—so learners can hear it read aloud. Learners can take notes, organize information, write, revise, edit and publish.
Step 3: Collect, Analyze and Respond to Data
»Use the data collection features in Start-to-Finish books and measure key writing outcomes in Write:OutLoud to:
- Identify problem areas
- Inform your instruction
- Respond quickly with appropriate levels of intervention
Strategic Tier 2 Interventions—
Support individualized instruction and/or small, targeted groups within the regular classroom.
Step 1: Strategic Instructional Resources To Meet Individual Learners’ Needs
»View one or more of the Lewis & Clark INCITE! films and provide a specific goal for each viewing (e.g. identify & define new vocabulary; make connections between events in the Lewis & Clark Expedition and events in the learners’ own lives).
- Build background knowledge
- Facilitate increased visualization
- Make personal connections
»Read Sacagawea: The Trip to the West (narrative text)
- Build additional background knowledge
- Make personal connections to a character
- Increase reading fluency and vocabulary in this topic area
»Read Traveling Off the Map or Native Americans in the Time of Lewis and Clark
- Select readability level (2/3 or 4/5)
- Select format: print book and/or audio book or customized computer book support
- Provide strategic reading and thinking templates as needed to move learners toward greater independence
»Use the SOLO Literacy Suite to customize assignments and support the learners’ reading, writing and thinking skills
- Import eText (text documents and/or web content) so learners can hear it read aloud
- Provide appropriate strategic reading and/or writing support templates
- Customize strategic learning templates for each learner
- Set learner preferences to provide the most appropriate scaffolds at any given time
- Turn Co:Writer ON and create and/or link Topic Dictionaries to assignments to support content-related word selection and spelling (e.g. “Merriweather Lewis” or “Native American.”)
Step 2: Collect, analyze and respond to frequent data collection
»Collect comprehension data using Start-to-Finish Library and Core Content end-of-chapter quizzes.
»Review and use data collected at the end of each Start-to-Finish book chapter and measure key writing outcomes in Write:OutLoud every few days to:
- Evaluate learner progress—rate and level of improvement
- Inform and drive rapid intervention design and response(s)
