Jennifer's Review, July 20, 2009

By Jennifer Rasmussen, Iowa

Product Setting: Self-contained classroom, Title I Reading, Teacher Preparation. Skill Development: Improving students' independent application of phonics principles.

In our current educational climate it is important that teachers are able to protect the best interests of our students while still meeting the guidelines set by NCLB. Cunningham is such a well-known name in the area of authentic phonics instruction, but this particular book shows that instruction can be both systematic and authentic. I used this book during my last years of teaching in a self-contained multiage primary classroom and as a Title I Reading teacher. Now as a faculty member of teacher education it is a great example to show preservice teachers that they can challenge the initial interpretations of systematic and explicit to remain authentic.

Cathy's Reading Review, April 17, 2009

By Cathy Paquat, Minnesota

Product Setting: Small group setting. Skill Development: Building word strategies and study of word parts, initial/median/ending sounds/phonemic awareness.

Used every other day for a short, 20 minute block, we have seen huge improvements in our students' word building abilities.
