Jurgis and his family leave Lithuania to find “the good life” in America. At first, they are excited to arrive at the stockyards in Chicago, where the meatpacking plants turn pigs and cows into pork and beef. But soon they learn that the stockyards are a horrible, dangerous place. Jurgis struggles to support his family through an endless series of accidents, disasters, and tragedies. In one battle after the next, Jurgis and his family are crushed. Then, just when it seems that he has reached his lowest point, Jurgis stumbles across an idea that could change everything.
