This book takes students on an exciting journey through our Solar System. Instead of traveling in a spaceship, they will hitch a ride on Halley's Comet! Halley's Comet has an orbit that takes it around the Sun about every 76 years. It last appeared in Earth's skies in 1986. Readers will catch up with Halley's at the far end of its orbit, out beyond the planet Neptune, in the year 2024. From there, they will get a grand tour of the Solar System as they ride Halley's around the Sun, returning to Earth in 2061.
By traveling through the Solar System from the outside in, students will gain a new perspective on the Sun and the family of objects that travel with it through space. They will learn about such key concepts as gravity, density, atmosphere, and the greenhouse effect. They'll witness firsthand how a "dirty iceberg" turns into a shining comet with a glorious tail. Perhaps most important of all, they will gain a new appreciation of planet Earth.
