The Call of the Wild may very well be the greatest animal story ever written. The tale is told through the eyes of a dog, Buck, who starts out his life as a domesticated animal — the loyal companion of a country gentleman. When gold is discovered in the Klondike, however, Buck is cruelly stolen from his comfortable life and sold into the harsh life of a sled dog in the frozen north. What follows is an incredible adventure. Faced with every imaginable travail, Buck comes into his own as a creature of savage instinct, great courage, and fierce loyalty. Ultimately, Buck is rescued from the savage brutality of incompetent drivers and dog fights by a kind and loving master. But when his master is killed, Buck’s last tie to humanity is severed, leaving Buck free to answer the call of the wild, and he walks into the woods to become the leader of a wolf pack.

Your students are sure to be deeply affected by The Call of the Wild. Told with unflinching honesty and compassion, the tale of Buck is the tale of anyone who answers the call to become what is great within them.
