From the Boston Tea Party, in 1773, to the British surrender at Yorktown, in 1781, For Liberty is a fictionalized journey through colonial America and the American Revolution. Follow our hero, David Brady—a printer's apprentice in Boston who becomes a soldier in the Continental Army—as he shows readers what life was like during colonial times.
Along the way, your students will experience famous historical events like The Shot Heard Around the World and the Battle of Bunker Hill. They will meet famous Americans like John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere. They will also see how the Sons and Daughters of Liberty and the Minutemen helped the colonies to win the American Revolution.
After reading For Liberty, your students will understand why the words of the Declaration of Independence and Thomas Paine's Common Sense were so important to the cause of American independence and democracy throughout the world. They will be aware of what the words to "Yankee Doodle Dandy" really mean, and they will know what it meant to be a patriot fighting for liberty.
