A champion racehorse named Silver Blaze has been kidnapped from his stable, just one week before a famous race called the Wessex Cup. The horse’s trainer, John Straker, has been brutally murdered. Sherlock Holmes, England’s greatest detective, and Dr. Watson, his learned sidekick, head for the open moors of Wessex to investigate.
The police have already arrested a young man named Fitzroy Simpson for the murder of John Straker. But Holmes is unconvinced of his guilt. Many questions remain to be answered. Where could a person hide a horse out on the open moor? Why have the sheep in the stable been going lame? Why didn’t the watchdog bark the night that Silver Blaze disappeared? And why was Straker carrying around a dressmaker’s bill for one Mr. William Derbyshire?
When Holmes puts all of the pieces together, he discovers a most unlikely murderer, and the joke is on anyone who doubted the famous sleuth’s abilities.
