Love of Life (1903)
Two prospectors have stayed out in the wild Yukon until both are starving and lost. The stronger man abandons the weaker. The weak man keeps moving. Every hour of the day, every step is pain. Hunting minnows and birds to eat is torturous frustration. Finally, pursued by a starving wolf, the man comes in sight of the sea and a ship — his only chance of rescue.
To Build a Fire (1901)
A young man and a wiser husky set out across the wilderness on a winter Yukon morning. The man doesn't realize how cold it will get and that soon he must either build a fire or freeze. As long as the man might build a fire, the dog stays with him. When the man fails, the dog trots off alone down the trail. This is London's most powerful story.
