Ken and Kris discover poachers who are shooting elk with a crossbow to cut off the antlers. The poachers sell the antlers to people who use them in medicine. The park’s elk herd is being decimated and Nick and the kids join the rangers in tracking down the poachers. Along the way, there are serious encounters with grizzlies.

The story introduces the reader to the geography, animal habitat, and thermal features of Yellowstone Park. The kids learn how Old Faithful geyser and the thermal hot springs are signs of ancient volcanic activity there.
