SOLO Writing Coach leverages the Self-Regulated Strategy Development
(SRSD) model created by Drs. Steve Graham and Karen Harris of Vanderbilt
University. It is widely accepted as the most effective model of
writing instruction for students with learning disabilities. According
to the Writing Next report, explicitly teaching writing strategies has
the largest effect on student writing outcomes. Through a meta-analysis
of many studies, the SRSD writing strategy method had a much greater
impact on students compared to other methods of teaching writing
strategies. “The average weighted effect size for SRSD studies (1.14)
was larger than for non-SRSD studies (0.62).” The SRSD method can be
used in intensive intervention settings or to supplement with your core
writing instruction.

The Common Core State Standards emphasize three typesand purposes for writing: arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and real or imagined narratives. Across these three, students must learn to write in a clear and coherent manner using development, organization, and style that are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience. The Common Core further calls for students to use a planning, revision, editing, and rewriting to develop and strengthen their writing while using technology and multiple forms and sources of information.
SOLO Writing Coach addresses each of the skills with strategies that are built strategically through step-by-step lessons. These lessons help teachers strengthen student writing—and the integration of SOLO builds in the accommodations necessary for students to fully access the curriculum.
