Portable text readers are all the rage in the consumer market right now—like the Nook, Kindle and iPad—and they are admittedly cool! The fundamental question is, were they designed with your students in mind? The answer is unfortunately, no. The good news, ClassMate Reader was purposefully built to support your students!
Now, you can bring all the excitement of portable readers to your students, while ensuring all the added supports they need are included.
ClassMate Reader accepts a wide range of text formats, the others will not. This is important because you’re going to be getting lots of different types of digital instructional materials. Let’s say you request a textbook from the NIMAC (a NIMAS file), or even a publisher (probably a pdf), none of the consumer models will read these file types. And then there’s the issue of auditory support, some of the consumer models do contain a text-to-speech feature, but whether speech will continue to be offered is still in question.
The ClassMate Reader includes an array of study and strategy tools to increase students’ active participation in the reading process.
Highlighting-By simply touching the screen, students can highlight text to focus on specific passages. They can later call up those highlighted passages in the form of an electronic study guide
Text and Voice notes-support text-to-self connections
Bookmarks-allow students to instantly return to important sections or pages
On-board dictionary- students can immediately look up a word's spelling, pronunciation and meaning
