Kidspiration Goes to China, May 13, 2009
By Lorri Gumanow, New York
Product Setting: This product was used both at home and in-school, along with an AlphaSmart Neo. Skill Development: Improved organization and writing in the content area for a student (who is also my son) with ADHD, OCD, tics and sensory processing disorder.
I'm a special education professional development specialist, so I'm always scaffolding my son's homework assignments and then sharing the strategies with his teachers. My 3rd grade son's homework assignment was to read a trade book about China and write 4 facts in a paragraph. Unfortunately, no graphic organizer, outline, or rubric was included, and he didn't know how to begin. I asked him if he knew how to draw a "bubble map," and he did. But drawing is a challenge for him, and would have taken forever for him to get it "perfect." So, I showed him Kidspiration (which I had ordered and received just the day before), and because of his experience with other "drawing" programs like KidPix, he knew exactly what to do. He figured out he could search for the graphics about China, put them into Kidspiration bubbles, and then take notes/facts from the book and put them in the bubbles with the pictures. Then he switched to Outline format, and organized a fantastic paragraph. He printed out his Kidspiration outline, and then used his Neo to write his paragraph and print it. His teachers (and myself!) could not believe how great his writing was. The best part was that he did it INDEPENDENTLY!!!! He didn't need refocusing, prompting, encouragement... He did it by himself and he was very proud of his work. His Kidspiration graphic organizer and his typed paragraph were posted in the classroom. I only wish more teachers could use your products in their classrooms - there are so many kids with special needs that could benefit and become more independent themselves.
