Students who are diagnosed within the Autism Spectrum Disorders, often times fail to acquire skills that are intuitively learned by most “non-autistic” students. In the past decade, a great degree of information has become available regarding ways we can provide better instruction and intervention to improve the development of these skills. The trick is finding what works. Varied use of technology has proven successful and of high interest to students with Autism. Technology can be used to target and improve:

 • Environmental Understanding  • Expressive Communication
• Attention
 • Social Interaction
 • Academics • Organization
 • Motivation  • Daily Independence and Life Skills • Self-help

Of further benefit, and more specifically, is the use of computers.  According to researcher Dr. Rita Jordon, Professor of Autism Studies at University of Birmingham (UK) and Co-editor of ‘Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice,’ research related to computer-use among students with autism revealed:

 Increases

 Decreases

  Focused Attention Agitation
   In-seat Behavior  Perseverative Responses
   Overall Attention Span  Self-Stimulatory Behaviors
   Fine Motor Skills
   Generalization skills
(from computer to non-computer related skills)
