Back when I was 14 years old, if someone would have told me that I would be inducted into the Association of Educational Publishers Hall of Fame with leaders like Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers Neighborhood), Dick Robinson (CEO of Scholastic) and Joan Ganz Cooney (co-founder of Sesame Workshop), I would have thought they were crazy. I hadn't even read my first book yet, and I dreaded reading in class. But something happened along the way that changed my world. One teacher completely changed my perception of myself and challenged me. Sometimes it's easy to forget the impact that we can have with education. We feel squeezed by the economy, by the governmental bureaucracy, and by the focus on testing over teaching. What this one teacher did in one year would ripple throughout my lifetime. This award is a symbol of the power of education—helping kids overcome barriers by inspiring them and making sure they have the tools they need to accomplish their goals.

This is a video that my brother, Kevin, and I put together to capture our father's passion for helping students who struggle in school. They played this video before his acceptance speech at the AEP Hall of Fame award ceremony in New York City. As Ted Hasselbring says in the video, "There are some great people in this world, LeaderLink | Ben and Kevin small graphicand everyone's better for it."  I couldn't agree more—especially when I think of how many more students are reading who wouldn't be without Don Johnston assistive technologies.                 Ben Johnston
