"Building Wings—a must-read for educators and parents"

 Building Wings Book cover

Debbie Brigner, Wayne Trace Payne Elem.School—Payne, Ohio

wrote to us about her experience with Don Johnston's autobiography, Building Wings

Debbie says, “My grandmother taught in a one-room school. I always wanted to be like her.  I am a Title I Reading Teacher and I love the variety of teaching students in both inclusion and pull-out settings. Being the oldest of nine, we had little “extras" growing up. Title I gives me the chance to help kids who don’t have the advantages that some of us may take for granted.

Reminded of her own school experiences

When my Superintendent suggested that we read Don’s book, I thought, “Well okay, it seems like it’s really written for students, but I’ll see what it’s about. As I read it, I was surprised by my reaction and what I remembered as a child in school. It brought back old feelings and of teachers who made me feel important and special and some who did not. My second grade phonics teacher is the reason I love and teach phonics today. My fourth grade teacher let me wash the board and help her in class. My journalism teacher in high school counted on me to make sure the weekly newspaper got published. And there were other teachers who made me feel inadequate, like a kindergarten teacher who said I talked too much or a junior high teacher who embarrassed me in front of the whole class, an event I never forgot!

Teacher Leader Tip: What we say does matter

As teachers, we need reminders of how important our daily comments can be to our students, both good and bad. A few years ago, I taught a little boy named Michael who was known as a “problem child”, like Don. I knew it wasn't his fault that he came from a poor family. I began to call on him whenever I could. His confidence grew and he became one of our best students; a memorable moment for me. His teacher was amazed at his progress. I often wonder if other teachers made him feel special once he left our school.

"Building Wings is a must-read for educators and parents"

Please share it with your friends and administrators and make a point of inspiring every child you come in contact with. I agree with Don, ‘every child can feel good about their unique learning style and reach their true learning potential and it’s our job to help them.'”
