TEACHER LEADER SPOTLIGHT

Ann Marie Flanagan

Systematic Approach To Improving Phonics
by Ann Marie Flanagan
Certified Elementary Teacher
Mocksville, NC

I am excited to share this case study (PDF, 288 KB) which demonstrates the positive outcomes we produced to improve students' phonics skills using good teaching strategies and Simon S.I.O.

As a result, our school will broaden our systematic literacy approach to reach a larger student population. I hope this study inspires you to do your own research to evaluate, test and revise a teaching strategy you use to ensure all of your students are learning and mastering core skills.

About Ann Marie Flanagan:

At five years old, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I set up a miniature classroom and played school with everyone that walked into my room. In high school, I tutored neighborhood children. Two were labeled with Specific Learning Disabilities and this intrigued me to research new ways of learning through strategies such as teaching to a student's strongest learning modality. I now have a Bachelors degree in Specific Learning Disabilities and a Masters in Varying Exceptionalities. In 2005, I became a National Board Certified Teacher and am very proud of my accomplishments.

Teacher-Leader Tip

This is my 11th year of teaching and I find that I learn the most from my students. Every day, I try to update my knowledge to add to my toolbox of strategies. My teacher-leader tip is to plan, plan, plan and be consistent with a schedule and a behavior routine with your students. Be flexible in all teaching areas and know that thousands of great teachers, like you, are working together to test new strategies and approaches. Together we can share validated strategies and experiences to help us connect core subject matter with every student. Go ahead…try something new and tell your great story to inspire other educators!
