Topic Dictionaries

Topic Dictionaries for CoWriter 4000 and CoWriter SmartApplet for both Macintosh and Windows Operating systems.

Downloading Topic Dictionary: Select the download link below each Topic Dictionary description within a category.

Note on compressed files: The downloadable files have been compressed for faster transmission. You will need to have a copy of WinZip or Stuffit Expander (depending on your system) installed before you can de-compress the files for use.To obtain a copy of WinZip, go to www.winzip.com or www.aladdinsys.com for a free copy of Stuffit Expander.

Once the Topic Dictionary file or files have been downloaded and de-compressed, you will need to copy the Topic Dictionary file(s) into your 'Topics' folder for CoWriter 4000 and/or into the 'Topics' folder for the CoWriter SmartApplet for the AlphaSmart. The following instructions assume that you want to install the Topic Dictionaries to a CoWriter 4000 folder. If you want to install them in the CoWriter SmartApplet or Neo folder, simply locate and use that folder instead.

 

PC systems

Download:

  1. Click on the desired download link to start the download process.
  2. You should get a File download dialog box asking you "What would you like to do with this file?" Select the option to "Save this file to disk" and click OK.
  3. You will then get a Save As dialog box giving you the opportunity to select the location where you would like to save the file(s) or choose the default location by clicking Save.
Extract and install the Topic Dictionaries:
  1. Once the download is complete you will have a file named [dictionary name].zip
  2. The file(s) with the extension .zip is the compressed version of the Topic Dictionary file that you downloaded.
  3. Navigate to the location that contains the Topic Dictionary [file name].zip file(s) you downloaded.
  4. Double-click the file to open it.
  5. Once you open the file in WinZip (or another ZIP file extractor program) follow directions to extract (Unzip or Extract) the files.
  6. When asked where to place the files you will need to do the following:
    For CW 4000 - versison 4.0
    All topics need to go in the CoWriter_4000 Topics folder. They need to be stored singly, not in subfolders. When you use 'Select Topic Dictionaries,' they will appear in the alphabetical list.
    For CW 4000 - version 4.1
    All topics need to go in the CoWriter_4000 Topics folder. They can be stored singly or in subfolders. When you use 'Select Topic Dictionaries,' folders will appear next to triangles. You click the triangle to open a category. Topics that are not stored inside folders will appear in an alphabetical list below the list with triangles.
  7. Once you have navigated to the Topics folder, simply click OK and the files will extract to the Topics folder.
  8. If Windows asks if you want to overwrite the existing files, select Yes to All.

 

Mac systems

Download:

  1. Click on the desired download link to start the download process.
  2. The download will start automatically and save the file(s) to either your desktop or a location specified by your browser. (For help finding your files, see the FAQ at the end of this document.)
  3. Internet Explorer users will see a Download Manager dialog box that should start the process for you.
Expand or unstuff:
  1. Once the download is complete you will have a file named [dictionary name].zip.
  2. The file(s) with the extension .zip is the compressed version of the Topic Dictionary file that you downloaded.
  3. Your system may be setup to automatically expand the compressed files during download.
  4. If automatic expansion occurs, you will have a .zip file (compressed version) and a .cwz (expanded file) for each individual Topic Dictionary you downloaded.
  5. If your system does not expand the file(s) automatically, simply expand the .zip file(s) by double-clicking on the file to open it.
Select and install the Topic Dictionaries:
  1. Locate the expanded file(s) you downloaded.
  2. Locate the CoWriter 4000 folder and open it. Look for a folder named Topics and open it.
  3. You should now have available: the open Topics folder and the Topic Dictionaries you downloaded.
  4. Select the downloaded Topic Dictionaries you want to move to CoWriter and drag them into the CoWriter Topics folder.
    Note: For CW 4000 - version 4.0

    All topics need to go in the CoWriter_4000 Topics folder. They need to be stored singly, not in subfolders. When you use 'Select Topic Dictionaries,' they will appear in the alphabetical list.

    For CW 4000 - version 4.1

    All topics need to go in the CoWriter_4000 Topics folder. They can be stored singly or in subfolders. When you use 'Select Topic Dictionaries,' folders will appear next to triangles. You click the triangle to open a category. Topics that are not stored inside folders will appear in an alphabetical list below the list with triangles.
  5. If Finder asks if you want to replace your old files with the ones you are moving, click OK.

 

FAQ 

What if I can't remember where I installed Co:Writer SE or Co:Writer 4000?

Here is how to find a file or folder on PC and Mac. You can use this same method to find the downloaded file if you do not know where it was downloaded -- simply substitute the name of the downloaded file for 'CoWriter SE' or 'CoWriter 4000' in your search.

PC systems -- finding the CoWriter folder

  1. Click the Start menu icon.
  2. Select 'Find' (called Search in Windows ME and 2000) and from the submenu select 'Files or folders.'
  3. In the 'Search for' field, type 'CoWriter SE' or 'CoWriter 4000' and be sure to have 'My Computer' selected in the 'Look in' list box, then click 'Search Now.'
  4. When the CoWriter SE or CoWriter 4000 folder appears in the search results, you will see the folder location listed next to it (example: C:\DonJohnston).
Mac systems
OS 9 or earlier
-- finding the CoWriter folder.
  1. From the Apple menu, select 'Sherlock' (OS 9 or above it's 'Sherlock 2', for OS 8, use command-F)
  2. Type CoWriter 4000 in the text field (In Sherlock 2 make sure the Hard Drive icon is highlighted).
  3. Check any partitions you want to search.
  4. Click the magnifying glass icon or 'find.' If installed, the CoWriter 4000 folder will appear in the list.
  5. Click the CoWriter 4000 folder in the Search dialog. It will show the path for locating the folder.
