Reader's Theater Winning School WIKI Graphic

Don Johnston would like to thank...

Barbara Wollak, M.S., CCC-SLP and Julie Rossini, M.S. DCD Teacher, along with their students from Highland Park Junior High School for this winning Reader's Theater school project using Building Wings.

View their wiki at http://hpjhmn.pbwiki.com to see how they used free Web 2.0 tools and strategies to design a winning online presentation featuring:

  • A book review using VoiceThread with video critique by students
  • Chapter reviews and written comments using a purpose and response rubric
  • Reader's Theater created with i-Movie with thought bubbles using Bubbleply
  • wiki visitor "stats" tool to monitor and track online visitors through use of StatCounter

Letter from Barbara Wollak and Julie Rossini...

Kids-Highland Park Jr. High We, at Highland Park Junior High, believe that all our students in the Inclusion Program can learn to read and write given good instruction and opportunities for authentic reading and writing.

We use a Four Blocks model consisting of working with words, guided reading, writing, and self-selected reading. We also know that motivation is key. We practice "writing without standards." Our first goal is to get our students excited about writing. Our students attach Co:Writer—SOLO to the comments section when writing on this wiki to give them spelling and grammar support.

Several of our literacy groups are reading Don Johnston's book Building Wings. Students and staff agree that this book is motivating and inspiring. Many of us can make connections from Don's life to our own experiences.

The following is a description of what we did:

  • Created a Building Wings wiki (hpjhmn.pbwiki.com)
    - A different page was created for each chapter of the book.
    - A purpose for reading each chapter was written. Each student read the purpose, read the chapter and then responded in the  comments section of the wiki.
  • The electronic version of Building Wings and Don’s interview was embedded into the sidebar of the wiki.
  • StatCounter was also embedded into the sidebar. This free site allows us to integrate math and geography into this project. Students are able to see how many people are looking at the wiki each day. They can also look at a recent visitor map within “view my stats” and see where the people who are looking at our wiki are located.
  • Quote GraphicStudents created pages in a PowerPoint book for a “Book Review”. We uploaded the PowerPoint into a Voicethread. Each student then made a video recording of reading the page he or she had written. We embedded this Voicethread into our wiki.
  • We made an iMovie from one class’ reading of the Building Wings Reader’s Theater. We uploaded that video into a Bubbleply. Students were able to add thinking bubbles to the video. The Bubbleply was also embedded into the wiki.

Our project can be found at our Building Wings wiki at hpjhmn.pbwiki.com
