Can Students use Don Johnston Assistive Technology
During Standardized Tests?
   —Oh Yes They Can!

There’s a lot of confusion out there about what you can do to support your students during standardized tests. The truth is, most states allow the use of AT during testing—you just have to know what your state's rules are. The rules detail the type or category of the technology, not the name of a specific company’s tool. For example, if you have and want to use Write:OutLoud, follow your state’s criteria for using a talking word processor. If you have and want to use Read:OutLoud, follow your state’s criteria for using a text reader.

Follow these simple steps to meet your state's testing accommodation criteria!

All states require that any assistive technology used during state testing must be listed on a student’s IEP, and that the technology is used in their daily instruction.
