“Leadership, Collaboration, Technology”: Top Education Initiatives Discussed at TRLD Conference
Celebrating its 25th successful year, the TRLD (Technology, Reading & Learning Diversity) conference held in San Francisco, CA on February 1-3 hosted six hundred
education leaders, technology experts and literacy specialists to
discuss the challenges of teaching children with diverse learning
needs, learning difficulties and disabilities. TRLD is a division of Don Johnston Incorporated.
March 21, 2007—Volo, Illinois—
The TRLD conference is known for its mission of gathering groups of educators and researchers together in a think-tank environment to discuss instructional strategies to enrich every child’s learning experience.
Ellin Oliver Keene, keynote speaker, renowned story teller and co-author of Mosaic of Thought: Teaching Comprehension, appealed to educators to teach with “emotion and understanding” and to create a unique learning experience based on each student’s feeling about a skill or topic. Examples included modeling concepts, dwelling in ideas and developing thoughts based on real experiences and emotional connections.
Other speakers included David Warlick, Education Consultant and author who shared the vision of Web 2.0 and the new form of digital and cyber information. Mr. Warlick’s TRLD blog can be found at http://davidwarlick.com/2cents/ .
Dr. Ted Hasselbring, Professor, Vanderbilt University facilitated an administrator panel posing the challenge of “Transforming Schools Through Technology.” State, University and District panel members shared visions of ubiquitous computing, digital infusion and the demise of intellectual property. Dr. Lynne Anderson-Inman, Director for the Center for Advanced Technology in Education at the University of Oregon invited participants to discuss her top 10 must-do list for 21st century teaching and learning, including leadership, professional development and collaboration. View a video of this administrative panel at http://www.trld.com/conferencereview.htm.
Unique to TRLD is the Community of Learners Café in which like-minded educators gather together to ask deep questions and to reflect on new teaching and learning practices. Interactive workshops focus on the use of critical thinking skills and apply new skills such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL is a relatively new concept for general educators, but long-embraced by educators of struggling learners to connect students’ thinking with their true learning potential.
TRLD 2008
TRLD will hold its next conference at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, CA, January 24-26, 2008. It will include 130 workshops and 60 exhibitors. A Call for Proposals is open until June 1, 2007. Call 1-888-594-1249 or visit http://www.trld.com/callpapersprop.htm.
