Schwab Learning Selects Start-to-Finish Books by Don Johnston Incorporated for 2007 Summer Read-a-Long Program
Don Johnston Incorporated and Schwab Learning will launch a 2007 Summer Read-a-Long Program for youngsters and teens, ages 7 to 14, in a 5-week session beginning May 29th through June 30th 2007.
May 2, 2007—Volo, Illinois—
Don Johnston Incorporated develops and publishes books, technologies and supplemental instructional programs to help struggling learners become better readers, writers and thinkers.
Schwab Learning provides free information, resources, publications and support to parents and children through two web sites, SchwabLearning.org and SparkTop.org™. Schwab Learning also creates outreach and public awareness programs to encourage parents and teachers to take positive action to help children with learning problems through early detection and intervention.
Schwab Learning and Mr. Johnston share a mutual desire to support families of children who struggle with learning difficulties. Mr. Johnston said, “Summer is a perfect time to settle in with a good book and get the entire family involved in the joy of reading, listening and learning!”
The Start-to-Finish® books are especially written to engage struggling readers with professionally narrated audio to reinforce the text. Book titles include classic literature, mystery thrillers, science voyages, popular sports figures and short-stories written in considerate text format in two readability levels. (2nd-3rd and 4th-5th). Parents can purchase books and audio from a list of 20 popular titles at discount rates by visiting www.SchwabLearning.org/summer. Orders may be faxed directly to Don Johnston Incorporated or by calling a toll-free number. Parents who register are eligible to enter a sweepstakes where 10 random winners will receive “FREE” six of the Start-to-Finish titles (audio and paperback). Winners will be announced on the SchwabLearning.org website by August 1, 2007. Parents can also learn about the scientific reading theory of “considerate text” from Start-to-Finish author and speech pathologist, Jerry Stemach by visiting the site.
“The goal of this program is to offer parents an opportunity to engage struggling students in a pleasurable reading experience,” said Jodell Seagrave, Managing Director at Schwab Learning. “To do that, the child must feel successful in the reading activity. Start-to-Finish books aim to inspire struggling learners to become independent readers and life-long learners by enabling them to have successful reading experiences.”
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in Audio and e-Book
When parents go to SchwabLearning.org/summer, Schwab Learning will provide a 5-week online summer reading activity for their youngsters and teens. Each week, readers will enjoy two chapters of the retold version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and can read-a-long and listen to the story after downloading the chapters in PDF format and audio in MP3 file for their iPods®, cell phones or to listen online. Readers will receive a Summer Read-a-Long Certificate to present to their teacher as they return to school in September.
Start-to-Finish Publishing supports the six dimensions of reading as outlined by the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Reading Excellence Act of 2002. The books are part of a comprehensive library of appealing books for struggling readers which includes over 150 titles in content areas such as Life, Earth and Space Sciences, American History, World History and Cultures, Classic Literature and more. Students who read these books will build content knowledge and appreciate the work of real scientists as they enjoy the experience of reading chapter books for pleasure and to practice core literacy skills in fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
The books are available in various pricing and package configurations to fit any district, school or library/media budget. Pricing begins for schools and libraries at $69.00 for a single title complete set which includes all three formats (paperback book, computer book and audio book). Computer books are not part of this summer offer, but can be purchased at regular prices. For larger buying options, discounts apply for software licensing and bulk pricing for additional paperback books. Visit www.donjohnston.com.
