Don Johnston Launches Network Version of SOLO®

Internet research tool used with digitized textbooks ensures literacy success by optimizing cognitive learning strategies.
July 10, 2006—Volo, Illinois—

Don Johnston and his outstanding company are proud to announce the fall 2006 release of its network version SOLO; an integrated technology solution and Internet research tool to build students' skill competencies in Social Studies, Science and Language Arts using digitized textbooks. SOLO is flexible, age-appropriate and will help students in grades 3 to 12 become successful readers, writers and independent thinkers.

SOLO is research-based software that combines a number of tools to help students read, write, plan, revise and edit using the cognitive teaching strategies of Universal Design for Learning with Don Johnston's proven, industry-standard programs Co:Writer®, Write:OutLoud®, Draft:Builder® and Read:OutLoud®. The network version offers Teacher Central, a hub to quickly define differentiated assignments, oversee skill development and analyze individual student progress.

Don Johnston, a long-time advocate for diverse learners and for the science of cognitive brain research, said, "The right conditions for learning are to create a balance between a student's individual challenges and the feasibility of what it will take to arrive at his/her optimal learning zone. The real strength of SOLO is in its instructional approach where learning hurdles are broken down into smaller pieces to guide the reading and writing process. The program includes mental modeling and multiple representations such as graphic organizers, homonym checkers, and supportive guides to help each student reach their peak potential."

As school textbooks become digitized, SOLO is a perfect tool for students to read the pages, highlight important concepts, take notes, and study thoughtfully prior to standardized testing. Individual SOLO components will build important literacy skills, but combined as a network option, teachers will achieve a greater impact on student outcomes across the entire reading and writing continuum. The program engages and motivates students to build skills while researching Internet sites, collecting key information and completing a writing project. SOLO is teacher-friendly and will enhance all teaching and assessment methods.
